Cranial Osteopathy

Peace and Performance Osteopaths in Auckland are cranial osteopathy specialists. Cranial osteopathy uses very subtle pressures to influence the overlapping sutures of the skull in order to influence the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain and spinal cord. In order to create optimal wellbeing throughout the body the CSF needs to access all areas of the spinal cord.

The patient will be encouraged to become as relaxed and comfortable as possible, and the osteopath will apply very light contact to the cranium (hence the name) as well as other parts of the body as necessary.  The osteopath is feeling for changes in the slow synchronous movement of the CSF relative to all other moving pulses (breathing, heart rate etc) and has to tune these other factors out.  By balancing the forces around the flow of CSF it is thought that better health will follow.

By bringing nutrients and removing by-products, osteopathic cranial manipulation supports better health outcomes and is a practical extension of the osteopaths’ role beyond musculoskeletal therapy.

Who may benefit most from cranial osteopathy?

Many patients will attest to the power of the cranial osteopathic influence, in addition to the more conventional musculoskeletal approach.  The cranial osteopathic technique is very subtle, making it the perfect choice for newborns and pregnant mums. Children in particular seem to be settled by the technique and this form of pediatric osteopathy is often used for calming children with colic and other developmental struggles.
Our cranial osteopath, Clive has had many years developing this technique and is undoubtedly one of the most experienced and respected practitioners in the country utilising this modality.
